Saint Joseph's University
Description
Created in 1961, ELS will show you a different lifestyle
and it will help you to improve your knowledge of the
language and culture of the United States. In Philadelphia,
the United States "cradle" and the second bigger
city of the East coast, the ELS program is located in
the St. Joseph University, which offers to the visitors
a vivifying experience in the American culture.
Lodging
The options include: host family houses, student’s
residences and apartments. In many cases, the lodging
arrangements can be done before arriving to the United
States.
Academics
ELS offers two English courses: Intensive and Semi-Intensive.
The Intensive Program has 30 weekly lessons and up to
twelve levels - that go from beginner to advanced and
"masters” levels. Before the beginning of the
classes, the student takes a test to determine his level
an how much he /she can speak, understand and write in
English. There are also special programs, including TOEFL
preparation and personalized instruction.
The Semi-Intensive English course was designed for those
who want to make good use of the classes and also have
free time to explore the environs and practice English
outside the classroom. It has 20 weekly lessons, with
emphasis on the communication skills and the practice
of the everyday English, with flexible schedules for the
beginning of each session and twelve learning levels,
from beginners to "masters".
The advanced level students will be able to take the “English
for Business" optional course. The students learn
the techniques of an effective presentation, practical
cases analysis and read about the present business practices.
Activities
The recreational facilities of St. Joseph’s University
include an Olympic swimming pool, equipment for weight
lifting, sauna and tennis, squash, volleyball and basketball
courts. Others of the activities include a travel in a
carriage through cobbled streets and a visit to the Independence
Hall and the Bell of Freedom, or to enjoy weekend trips
to Washington D.C., New York, Atlantic City, Boston and
the Niagara Falls.
